LDS Charities Tests New Wheelchair Designs

LDS Charities is partnering with Colours ‘N Motion, Inc. to create three different wheelchair designs. The designs are based on feedback from wheelchair users, partner organizations, trainers, and others. Since 2001, LDS Charities has provided over 700,000 wheelchairs to people with disabilities in over 100 developing countries. The three new designs – standard, active, and all-terrain – are currently undergoing user field trials in eight countries and ISO 7176 testing.

The new standard wheelchair will come in seven sizes (widths) ranging from 300 mm to 600 mm. The active and all-terrain models will come in five sizes (widths) ranging from 300 mm to 500 mm.

All three models are adjustable, and can be fit to the needs of each individual user. Key adjustability features are detail below and summarized in the chart at the end of the article.

Seat depth (all models) – one, two, or more straps or belts can easily be removed to shorten the seat depth.

Seat back height (all models) – the back canes can be re-positioned to increase or decrease the seat back height.

Seat back angle (active and all-terrain models) – can be adjusted in 6 degree increments between 78 and 114 degrees.

Footrest height (standard model) – the footrest plate can be removed and attached in a “higher” position on the footrest hanger so the wheelchair can be better fit to individuals with a shorter lower leg length.

Footrest angle (standard model) – can be adjusted plus or minus 25 degrees.

Footrest angle (active and all-terrain models) – can be adjusted with two bolts that secure the clamp to the footrest downtubes.

Footrest position (active and all-terrain models) – can be adjusted backwards or forwards to properly position to fit the user.

Armrest height (standard model) – Seven height adjustments with a range of 90 mm.

Armrest height (active and all-terrain models) – 75 mm range of adjustment. Armrests can also be set up to be either fixed or swing-away / removeable.

Center of gravity (active and all-terrain models) – 75 mm range of adjustment.

Floor to seat height (active and all-terrain models) – three heights of 510 mm, 495 mm, and 480 mm; adjusted by two bolts on each axle plate and adjusting the position of the front castor axle on the fork.

Adjustable side guard height (active and all-terrain models) – side guard height can be adjusted to ensure it covers the rear wheel when the floor to seat height has been adjusted.

Floor to seat height (standard model) – three heights of 510 mm, 485 mm, and 460 mm; adjusted by moving the rear axle up or down in the frame and adjusting the position of the front castor axle on the fork.

While some of the adjustable features of the wheelchairs described herein include one or more straps, belts, bolts, footrests, armrests, downtubes, frames, wheelchair styles, wheelchair sizes, or other elements, such elements may be changed, as appropriate, with components that perform similar functions.
